Net Zero Foods, a UK organisation promoting sustainable consumption of food and drink products, would like to be first to launch an entirely plastic free can, according to its director.

Pascal Du Bois told The Canmaker they wish to use a modified seaweed lininginstead of the typical polymer lacquer.

He said: “Plastic is responsible for an enormous amount of problems with the human endocrine and microplastics are causing increasing health problems.”

The announcement follows Net Zero Foods’ recent launch of ROBOT Kombucha,a healthy cola filled in aluminium cans.Manufactured by Luxembourg-based canmaker Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP),the 330ml standard cans are digitally printed by NOMOQ, which is part of the Ardagh group. NOMOQ’s commercial chief Patrick Schweizer said they print cans at two sites: Leamington Spa in the UK and Kirchheimbolanden in Germany. Du Bois said: “Aluminium cans are the best, most sustainable way of transporting drinks, more efficient than glass because of the cost to manufacture – we have done our homework.
